Coffee

Coffee is a beverage made of roasted coffee beans.  Coffee beans come from the coffea plant, a shrub that grows in places such as Africa, Central and South America, Southeast Asia and India. Coffee beans are actually the roasted seeds of berries of the coffea plant. Coffee is the top export in many countries, and there are 70 different countries around the world that produce this product!

Coffee can be made many different ways. For example, espresso, lattes, hot coffee, iced coffee, french press are all different ways to prepare coffee! Many people like to put milk or cream into their coffee along with sugar. Nowadays, there are so many different coffee drinks you can order from places like Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts. There are frappuccinos and macchiatos, and other crazy flavored iced, hot and frozen drinks.

actually (adverb): used to refer to what is true or real
export (noun): a product that is sent to another country to be sold there

flavored (verb): to give or add flavor to, to add a taste

Grammar Point

Using commas to separate items in a list

Rule: Use commas to separate words and word groups in a simple series of three or more items. 

Examples:

  • Different types of coffee include hot coffee, espresso, lattes, cappuccinos, and iced coffee.
  • My grandmother went to the supermarket and bought bread, mustard, turkey, cheese, lettuce, and tomato.
  • My three favorite subjects in school are Spanish, math, and social studies.
Sometimes writers do not use a comma before the last item in a list, this is acceptable, however writers generally include this final comma.

  • The three New York football teams are the Giants, the Jets and the Buffalo Bills.
  • The restaurant serves ravioli, spaghetti, tortellini, penne, rigatoni and tagliatelle.
